A little about La Calzada Island:
La Calzada is an island of 1,600 people nestled within the mangrove forests along the Pacific coast of El Salvador. When CFCI first arrived, we encountered abject poverty, severe malnutrition, widespread teenage pregnancy, and overwhelming economic and medical needs. The island had no access to healthcare. In medical emergencies, residents either died on the island or faced the difficult journey to the mainland. At that time, approximately ten infants died each year during childbirth due to the complete absence of basic maternity care.
Through the generosity of faithful donors, we constructed a medical center with new dock, an education facility, and modern restrooms. Our kitchen now provides regular meals for malnourished children. In addition, we installed a commercial reverse osmosis water system that produces 3,500 gallons of clean drinking water — bringing safe water to the island for the first time in its history.
We sponsor ongoing medical and dental care through short-term volunteer teams, weekly visits from local physicians, and monthly dental services. A nutritionist provides weekly education and treatment for malnourished children. As a direct result of these efforts, infant mortality on the island has been reduced to zero.
While this progress is extraordinary, there is still much more to be done to fully achieve our mission. Your prayers and financial support are deeply appreciated — and your presence can make an eternal difference. Come and join us!
